To reduce spam calls on iPhone, start with the Phone settings: screen or silence unsaved callers, enable carrier spam filtering if available, and block persistent unwanted numbers. A call-blocking app can add identification and blocking, but no option catches everything.
The main steps below follow Apple’s current iPhone guide. On iOS 18, the control is called Silence Unknown Callers. On iOS 17, Phone appears directly in Settings, without the Apps menu. Availability can vary by region, carrier, and iOS version.
1. Choose your starting point
An unknown number could be a delivery driver, a new client, or a spam caller. Decide whether you want to reduce interruptions from all unsaved callers or identify likely spam while keeping other calls audible.
- Need to receive new callers? Try screening and carrier spam controls before silencing all unsaved numbers.
- Mostly hear from saved contacts? Silencing unsaved callers may be useful. Save important numbers first and keep checking voicemail.
- The same number keeps calling? Block that specific caller. This will not block every new number they may use.
2. Screen or silence unsaved callers
On current iOS, go to Settings › Apps › Phone › Screen Unknown Callers. Apple documents three choices:
- Never: unsaved callers can ring normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: callers are screened before your phone rings, so you can decide whether to answer.
- Silence: unsaved numbers are silenced and sent to voicemail.
Choose the option that suits the calls you expect. If you are waiting for a doctor’s office, a repair visit, or a new contact, screening may be more useful than silencing.
On iOS 18, open Settings › Apps › Phone › Silence Unknown Callers. That setting allows calls from Contacts, recent outgoing calls, and Siri Suggestions while silencing other callers. Its behavior is not identical to the newer screening menu.
Apple says call screening is unavailable while roaming and is turned off for 24 hours after an emergency call. Check Apple’s guidance for availability on your device.
3. Check your carrier’s spam controls
In the current Phone settings, the Call Filtering section has separate controls:
- Unknown Callers moves calls from unsaved numbers into a separate call-history list. It is a sorting control, not the same as silencing them.
- Spam silences calls your carrier identifies as possible spam or fraud and sends them to voicemail.
If a spam control is missing, check what your carrier supports. On iOS 18, a supported carrier’s option may appear as Silence Junk Callers under Call Blocking & Identification. Carrier services and costs can differ.
4. Block a persistent individual number
Open the unwanted call’s details in the Phone app, then choose the option to block that caller. This is useful for a repeating number; it is less effective against callers who rotate or spoof numbers.
Blocked callers can still leave voicemail without notifying you. Manage blocked contacts in Settings › Privacy & Security › Blocked Contacts.
5. Enable a call-blocking app when it helps
An app can identify or block numbers in its supported lists. Downloading it alone may not activate protection. After following its in-app setup, open Settings › Apps › Phone › Call Blocking & Identification and enable the relevant extension.
Shesek makes Robocall Blocker – Roblock, which offers spam-call identification, blocking, and SMS filtering. Optional paid features include neighbor-spoofing blocking. Review each feature before enabling it: a number that looks local can still belong to someone you want to hear from.
Caller ID can be falsified. A familiar area code is not proof of who is calling, and a call-blocking app cannot guarantee that all unwanted calls will stop.
6. Check what your settings filtered
For the first few days, review voicemail and filtered call lists. On current iOS, the Phone app’s filter menu includes Unknown Callers and Spam. The main history tab is called Calls in the Unified layout or Recents in the Classic layout.
Save wanted callers to Contacts and adjust your settings if you miss useful calls. Start with one change at a time so you can tell what is helping.
Common questions
Does Silence Unknown Callers block spam calls?
It silences a broader group of callers based on whether they are known to your phone. It does not prove a caller is spam, and silenced callers can go to voicemail.
Why do spam calls keep coming from different local numbers?
Callers can spoof the number shown in caller ID. Blocking a single displayed number may not stop later calls that display another number.
Do I need an app to reduce spam calls?
Not necessarily. Try the built-in screening and carrier controls first. An app may help if you want additional identification or blocking features.
